Incoterms 2020
EXW (Ex Works)
An Incoterm under which the seller makes goods available at their premises and the buyer bears all onward cost and risk.EXW places minimum obligation on the seller: they simply make the goods available at their factory or warehouse, not even loading them. The buyer handles loading, export clearance, main carriage and import — making EXW the term least favourable to buyers unfamiliar with the seller's country.
Frequently asked questions
- Who clears the goods for export under EXW?
- The buyer is responsible for export clearance under EXW, which can be impractical in some countries — FCA is often preferred instead.
- Does the seller load the goods under EXW?
- No — under EXW the seller is not obliged to load the goods onto the collecting vehicle; loading is at the buyer's risk.
