Demurrage

A charge for keeping a container inside the port or terminal beyond the free time allowed before it is picked up.

Demurrage accrues when a full import container stays at the terminal past its free days, compensating the carrier or terminal for the occupied slot. It is distinct from detention, which applies once the container has left the terminal — demurrage is the inside-the-gate clock, detention the outside-the-gate clock.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between demurrage and detention?
Demurrage is charged while the container sits inside the terminal past free time; detention is charged after it leaves, while the box is still with the customer.
How can demurrage be avoided?
By clearing customs and collecting the container within the free time, and by pre-arranging transport and documents before the vessel arrives.
