Freight forwarder

An intermediary that organizes the transport of goods on behalf of shippers, arranging carriers, documents and customs.

A freight forwarder does not usually own transport but books carriage across sea, air, rail and road, consolidates cargo, issues transport documents and coordinates customs clearance. Forwarders are often named as shipper or consignee on the bill of lading and can act as, or work alongside, the customs broker for an import.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a freight forwarder and a carrier?
A carrier physically moves the goods; a freight forwarder arranges and coordinates transport but typically does not operate the vehicles itself.
Does a freight forwarder handle customs?
Many forwarders arrange customs clearance directly or through a partnered customs broker as part of a door-to-door service.
